Skilling and Resilient Community Project

We are working towards ending Poverty and domestic violence in Masaka District through providing communities with vocational skills and seed Capital to enable them become self-reliant and responsible citizens in Uganda. Most of the families are headed by single mothers and children. The male household heads are mainly into drinking and gambling. This has resulted into family breakdown leading to a greater influx of children on the streets of Masaka city in a bid to look for survival through pick pocketing, collecting and selling scrap and begging. Building the ability of Women and Youth in communities will be mainly owing to the Village savings and Loans Association (VSLA) strategy. This will teach them to save money so they can achieve their goals while practice internal lending for sustainability.

In Masaka District, there is a high teenage pregnancy rate of 28.2% with associated low contraceptive use with the high rate. Teenage pregnancy is associated with school drops and abortions. Lack of knowledge of the woman’s fertility cycle, absence of health education on family planning, limited knowledge on life skills such as critical thinking, decision making, and communication skills which has led to increased domestic violence, child neglect, crime rates, unintended pregnancies and early marriage among others. The risks to young mothers of poor maternal/child health may be exacerbated by stigmatization, isolation from family, unsafe abortion attempts, and lack of sexual reproductive health information and life skills. We are providing professional training in reproductive health literacy and life skills to key community leaders, who will then disseminate this knowledge to their respective communities.

Reproductive Health Advocacy Project.

In Rural Masaka district, there is a number of youths that practice agriculture but for home consumption and this has kept youth in poverty because they take it as not employment. Failure of the government to advocate agriculture for the youths as employment opportunity has brought young people to abandon it since they see little opportunities of livelihood yet agriculture is the back born of Uganda where both educated and uneducated can earn to live a better life. The type of agriculture that communities practice is associated with low prices in market, and high prices of farm inputs yet there is lots of farm pests and diseases that hinders crop growing in the area. We are providing professional training and skilling of the beneficiaries in different Agri-business activities such as, Poultry, piggery, Tree farming, bee keeping, Fruit farming, spice processing & packaging, beverage production and vegetable farming associated with giving them seedlings as well as connecting them to markets while encouraging them savings and investment in other fields as a way of accumulating more wealth for sustainability.

Agri-business Project.

Growing up in a clean and safe environment is every person’s right. Access to clean water, basic toilets, and good hygiene practices not only keeps people thriving, but also gives them a healthier life. In Greater Masaka there is a problem of clean water where the majority of villages have one unclean Well serving 1000+ of people and animals. At DYIU we help communities access clean water, have toilets and live in clean environment through construction of Bore holes, Dams and providing water tanks to help people harvest and keep safe rainy water to be used for a good time.

WASH Project.

Financial Literacy and VSLA Projects.

We are working to improve the financial literacy of Ugandan citizens and active and strengthen the foundations for improving consumer protection in financial services. W conduct this project through financial literacy trainings, encouraging communities to create VSLA groups in their areas of residence as a way of fostering livelihood improvement and sustainability for future years.
