Dependable Youth Initiative Uganda
Where it all started
Having grown up in a small Rural poverty-stroke community where residents can’t afford two meals a day, Early pregnancies and Domestic violence are order of the day resulting into school dropouts for young children, family neglect and suicidal tendances among the people which came up as a result of failure to affording what to eat as well as looking after other family members. Girls between 15-17 years involve in sexual affairs not because they want but it’s the only way to survive with the mindset of getting what to eat and also acquire their needs to thrive through the adolescent stage of their life like Sanitary pads because Poverty has caused parents irresponsible spending all hours drinking and taking drugs as a way to be offline to problems.
Due to high poverty levels within the community, Youths are living in an agonistic life without hope for change and this affecting many generations. Young boys abandon their responsibilities and Even shift(disappear) after making young girls pregnant leaving them without care and suffering for life. Once a girl gets pregnant that marks the end of her school time and is seen as a failure within the community to an extent of being chased out of her own parents’ home. “Imagine that trauma”.
After growing up observing the state of life for the Youths and Early mothers are going through with in the community. I decided to engage Community leaders to see how all these issues can be solved to break this cycle and empower the community for sustainability. I made a life-altering decision. It was the last year that I vowed to take action and find a way for the people to no longer resign themselves to a life of poverty but instead uplift themselves through different life changing activities.
Together with like-minded individuals within the community and family, we formed a non-profit organization focused on fostering self-sufficiency and empowering individuals to become masters of change within their own lives. We established DYIU with the mission to: Empowering Communities while creating equal opportunities among people to improve livelihoods while reducing poverty, Unemployment, Domestic violence and preserving climate.
DYIU is built on transparence, Integrity, accountability and Togetherness. With these values we deliver our outputs towards the stakeholders, partners and funders’ expectations to change the community.
