Restoring Dignity Through Basket Weaving- Nandawula Maxy
1 min read

Nandawula Maxy from Kyantale Village in Masaka District, Uganda, is a powerful example of how empowerment and opportunity can transform lives. A single young mother living with a disability, Maxy once struggled to support her children and faced significant social and economic challenges. At the time we met her, she had lost hope for economic progress and often felt disrespected and overlooked within her community.
Through the intervention of Dependable Youth Initiative Uganda (DYIU), Maxy was identified and supported through a skills empowerment initiative aimed at helping vulnerable women build sustainable livelihoods. She received training in basket weaving, a practical and marketable skill that enabled her to start a small income-generating activity.
With determination and commitment, Maxy embraced the opportunity and began producing handwoven baskets for sale. Over time, her work has grown into a small but reliable business that now provides her with a source of income. Today, Maxy is able to earn money through her basket weaving enterprise, allowing her to take care of herself and support her children with greater dignity and independence.
Maxy’s journey represents more than just economic improvement—it is a story of restored confidence, renewed hope, and social inclusion. Her transformation demonstrates the impact of empowering vulnerable individuals with practical skills and opportunities for self-reliance.
