The Transformation Journey of Ssenkungu Steven

Ssenkungu Steven’s journey is a powerful example of how access to knowledge, financial support, and community structures can transform the lives of rural small-scale farmers. Before joining the agribusiness project implemented by Dependable Youth Initiative Uganda (DYIU), Steven faced challenges that limited his farming potential, including inadequate resources to properly manage and invest in his garden.

Through the project, Steven received training in modern farming techniques, financial management, and market access. In addition, he became a member of a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) established by Dependable Youth Initiative Uganda to support farmers with accessible financial resources. Through this VSLA, Steven was able to access funds that helped him take care of his garden, including purchasing necessary farm inputs and managing his crops more effectively.

With the skills and financial support gained, Steven diligently applied the improved farming practices on his crops. During our recent monitoring visit, we observed that his crops had matured well and were ready for harvest. Steven has now begun harvesting and selling his produce, generating income that is already improving the welfare of his household.

His progress clearly demonstrates how combining capacity building with community-based financial systems like VSLAs can empower farmers to invest in their work, increase productivity, and build sustainable livelihoods.

Steven’s transformation journey is inspiring other farmers in the community and shows the real impact of the agribusiness project. Dependable Youth Initiative Uganda will continue providing technical guidance and follow-up support to ensure that more beneficiaries replicate such success and strengthen their economic resilience.
